How to install bathroom VJ panelling?

Hi all,

Currently in the Demo phase of a bathroom and laundry reno. We're planning on installing hardie vj panelling (groove lining) as a feature wall and just wondering if it would be best to install directly onto the stud wall or install villaboard first then the panelling? I would like to have a flush finish with the floor tiles instead of having skirting tile along the base of the VJ panelling. If I installed the hardie vj directly on the studs, I assume the skirting tile is for covering the waterproofing. If installed onto villaboard, waterproofing would be on the villaboard and the nails for mounting would compromise the membrane.

I've attached 3 images, first 2 showing the finish I'm after, and also one with skirting tile.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

I could not locate any readily available information about using Hardie Groove Lining in wet areas where membranes are present, so you'll have to bear with me so I can get in touch with James Hardie's technical team.

I have sent them an email and will give them a ring when they resume work either tomorrow or Monday.

When I have received a response, I will assist further.

I have spoken to the technical team at James Hardie, who have mentioned that you can use Hardie Groove without Villaboard backing or skirting tiles as long as it is outside of direct wet areas such as showers, bath surrounds and splashbacks. The bottom edge of the sheet would also need to be sealed with a suitable silicone sealant, with a perimeter flashing beneath the Hardie Groove and tiles to create a waterproof floor-to-wall junction.

Looking at the NCC (National Construction Code) Part 10.2 Wet area waterproofing, section 10.2.24 Flashings/junctions states -

Flashings must be installed in accordance with 10.2.2 to 10.2.5 and the following:

Perimeter flashing to wall/floor junctions must have a—
1. vertical leg that extends a minimum of 25 mm above the finished floor level, except across doorways; and
2. horizontal leg that has a minimum width of not less than 50 mm.

My understanding of this is that you could use an angle that sits beneath the Hardie Groove and tiles made of a waterproof material such as this Metal Mate 50 x 50 x 1.6mm 3m Aluminium Equal Angle, assuming the top edge finishes 25mm above your floor tile and you tie in your floor membrane with this angle.

In saying this, as waterproofing is a licenced industry, you should confirm any plans with a suitably licenced person to ensure they are up to the relevant codes.

Thanks Jacob. Further consultation with the better half is that she would prefer the skirting tile that would cover the membrane. Good info and appreciate you following it up.
