How to resurface tile with custom colour?

Hi All,

We replaced our toilets recently, and under the area where the old toilet pan sat there are some marks. Some marks are scratches (either during the installation of the original toilet or its removal - were not sure) and some sort of adhesive compound we can seem to scrap off (with a plastic spatula).

I prefer not to have to replace the tiles. Is there a way I can resurface the tiles with a custom colour match?

Hi @Shorty,

To me, that looks more like a surface-level scuff than a scratch that has penetrated through the outer coating to the colour, so I would start by doing everything I can to clean it before moving on to paint. 

First, try using a tile cleaner such as this Long Life Tile Cleaner and scrubbing it with a stiff-bristle scrubbing brush or Non-Scratch Scourer Pad. If this doesn't work, try something like CLR, allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes, then scrub it. If this doesn't work, then try isopropyl alcohol or turpentine. If none of these methods work, then you could look at painting.

Unfortunately, to colour-match things, you need to be able to take them in-store so they can be scanned with the spectrometer to mix the custom paint. Because of this, your best option is to head in store and grab a few different colour cards that look fairly close, take them home and compare them in person, and select the one that looks closest.

Ideally, you would use Dulux Renovation Range Tiles & Benchtop Paint or White Knight Renew Tile And Laminate Paint, but as they do not come in small sizes, they would be fairly costly for a small repair. If you were aware that there's no guarantee it would last, you could use a sample pot of paint to carry out the touch-up.
