What should I put under the batts in garage ceiling under floorboards?

A friend has asked me to put batts under her floor which is over the garage. It is an exposed timber floor above the garage and I am wondering what I should put under the batts to prevent fibres from circulating in the garage. The batts are Bradford underfloor batts. Would shade cloth prevent fibres from circulating? I presume I should not use plastic film or polythene as that would trap moisture.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about installing batts in your garage.

I propose having a look at the Ametalin 1370mm x 30m VapourTech Brane VHP Vapour Permeable Wall Insulation. These are designed to stop dust and fibres from escaping while allowing moisture vapour to pass through, which prevents condensation build-up. They are also tough enough to staple across joists and act as a long-lasting support under the batts. You can also provide extra support by installing Zenith 19mm x 700m Poly Pro Insulation Strapping running across the face of the Ametalin with appropriate spacing.

I have often sat in my garage/libary and thought along the same lines 🙂 I use to think of some kind of styrofoam insulation or spray foam but over the years I have ended up closer to the insulation you have mentioned. I hadnt thought of the vapourtech insulation that @EricL has mentioned but as soon as I read it, a light bulb went off. 🙂 The strapping is how I was thinking of securing it wityhout the vapourtech 🙂

It would be intreresting that once you have installed it, if you could come back and let us know if the temperture rises or becomes more stable?
