How to build raised tropical garden bed over crusher dust?

Hi,

Am removing river pebbles from the side of the pool and want to put in some slightly raised garden beds (from 200mm to 400mm).

There was a small layer of crusher dust I initially laid down before the river pebbles.  If I rake this into the soil below and then apply some good soil on top for the beds, will this be okay for the plants I am thinking about (see list).

I would prefer to rake in than remove the layer of crusher dust.  It isn't a thick layer.

Yes, you can rake the thin layer of crusher dust into the soil below and then add good-quality garden soil on top for your raised beds, and it shouldn’t be a problem for the plants you’ve chosen. Crusher dust is inert and free-draining, which is fine as long as there’s enough nutrient-rich soil above it for plant roots to grow into. 

Start by raking and loosening the crusher dust so it mixes with the existing soil, preventing it from forming a hard, compacted layer. Then add a premium garden soil on top—aim for at least 300mm of quality soil, especially for larger plants like Elephant Ears, Heliconias, and Viburnum. Improve this soil further by mixing in compost to boost fertility and water-holding capacity, which is particularly important for tropical species. 

Finally, apply a thick layer of organic mulch, such as sugarcane or bark, to help retain moisture and keep the roots cool.
