Does an LPG oven need a gas regulator?

Hi all,

I have a gas regulator installed on my LPG gas bottles outside. Do I still need an additional gas regulator on the appliance itself, specifically for a Chef LPG oven? (There is a threaded 20mm male outlet on the wall and the same on the oven.)

If so, would it be the same type of regulator used for a standard LPG BBQ?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

Not all regulators are the same, and I would be cautious about making any decisions without concrete information about your specific product.

Unfortunately, I am not aware of the installation requirements of that product, but I imagine there will be details in its installation manual. I'd suggest this is the best place to look for answers to your question.

If this does not provide the answers you are looking for, I would suggest you contact the manufacturer.

You should never take any chances with gas, as any mistakes can be catastrophic.

Thanks, Jacob. The manual doesn’t mention anything, and I’ve contacted the manufacturer (Chef), but they just directed me to an overseas call centre. Unfortunately, their suggestions were all over the place and unrelated to my actual question — pretty frustrating, to be honest.

Just thought I’d put it out here in case anyone else has an LPG oven and might be able to offer some insight. Picture.png.jpg

I did get this with the oven but the instructions dont say what it is.

Unfortunately, with gas appliances, it's always better to be safe than sorry, and I am certainly not qualified to make any assessments.

It might seem overkill, but a gas plumber would likely be your best avenue for getting answers if the manufacturer is not helpful.

I would head towards a plumber or a plumber that does heater maintance (my local guy is chatty and helpful) and ask them. I wanted to get the heater I had bought second hand serviced and found out it was an LPG run heater, the plumber converted it from LPG to natural gas and didnt cost a lot more then the service itself. Before that I did not kow that there was a difference between the two types 😲 I would rather get that knowledge from someone qualified for sure.

I just called a gas fitter plumber mate and he said it should only need the one regulator it's very uncommon that a 2nd is used.

But also said he would recommend you call a Chef service agent rather than Chef to avoid that overseas call centre issue. It is possible that it may require a specific regulated flow valve rated to match the model you have being an oven not a BBQ on LPG.

And as @JacobZ stated when it comes to anything gas, I wouldn't be taking any risks.
