A timber veneer mid-century modern bedside table was upcycled using paint and a new handle, forming the basis for a bedside makeover.
The project
An on-the-side-of-the-road bedside table find was the inspiration for the theme for this makeover. The old bedhead had recently received a white coat of paint to cover the stained timber and the photo in the frame was taken by me on my phone on holidays to Palm Springs last year. A poster-sized enlargement was inexpensive as was the frame. The pink cushions were on sale and the bed linen was from another bedroom so this was an economical makeover. The pot plant and a cutting from my garden completes the look.
Steps
Step 1
Before! The table was wood veneer, so I was sceptical whether I could paint over it using ordinary paint. I decided to give it a try as it was going in the spare bedroom so would not receive any knocks or scratches etc. Firstly, I removed the legs and handle and gave it all a really good sand with medium grade sandpaper to remove the sheen. I then went over with fine sandpaper, gave it a wipe down and cleaned all the pieces with sugar soap.
Step 2
I filled the existing screw holes for the handles with multi purpose filler, as I wanted the handles to fit as close to the top of the drawer as possible without the drawer front splitting (it was made from chipboard). I decided to drill the new holes first, because if I did this after I painted and it split, I would have to repaint again after repairs. I measured and marked where I wanted the holes to go and started off with the smallest sized drill bit, eventually working up to the size needed to fit the handle screws.
Step 3
I painted three coats of the primer and three coats of white semi gloss to give it a really good coverage. I used a vice to hold the legs in a secure position to paint them. I reattached the legs and attached the new handles.
