How to fix timber flooring transition to carpet?

Hi there

My flooring contractor left an unfinished work at the main entrance of my apartment. I’ve the flooring done inside my unit and there’s an unfinished work at the door entrance transitioning to the carpet. Can you advise if I can fix it myself? Thanks.

Hi @Chin,

It looks like the flooring at your entrance has been finished with a trim piece, but the carpet from outside is slightly too long. To fix it, the carpet needs to be cut back neatly in line with the trim and then glued down against it. You’d need a sharp retractable knife and a steady hand to cut a perfectly straight line for a clean finish. While it’s possible to attempt this yourself, any uneven cuts could require repairs, which might become an issue with your body corporate. For that reason, it may be safer to have the flooring or carpet installer come back to complete it. If you do try it yourself, make sure to wear cut-resistant gloves to stay safe while trimming.

Thank you. Seems like the bottom foam is shorter and leaving a gap. Is this something that need to be done? The carpet installer is not coming back to fix this to my frustration. I have to finish it up. 🙁

It would be ideal if the carpet underlay came closer to the edge @Chin. Once you cut the carpet back, you may notice the edge dips slightly where the underlay is shorter. If this dip is noticeable, you could try adding extra underlay or adhesive foam strips under that area to build it up, aiming for around 20mm from the floor trim edge. Then, glue the last section of carpet down over it. Ultimately, it depends on how it looks after cutting. If the depression is minor, it may not be an issue at all.

That’s good to know. Do you recommend to cut and glue? Or glue then cut off the access carpet trim? I think this is manageable by me if I get the right tool - foam, retractable cutter and glue.

You're probably going to need to cut it first, as you won't be able to glue it down right into the corner next to the floor trim without cutting @Chin.
