How to refresh weathered timber fence?

Hi community,

I have partial wooden fence around my house that I would like to refresh as it is currently weathered. What would be a cost-effective solution that can be applied on the wooden part of the fence and what preparation steps would be required? Product recommendations will be welcomed.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Eugenie. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your questions about restoring your wooden fence.

It looks like your fence was originally coated with an exterior oil, like those that are used on decks. It looks a little bit weathered, but nothing too crazy that would require a full sand back and recoat.

If any areas feel rough, give them a quick once-over with some 120 Grit Sandpaper, then give it a good clean with some Cabot's Deck Clean and a scrubbing brush.

Once dry, mask off the brick with some masking tape to stop oil from going where you don't want it.

You can then apply a clear exterior oil such as Cabot's Natural Decking Oil. Apply a light coat with a brush or roller, allow it to dry, then apply a second coat. Make sure you go back over it with your brush or roller to smooth out any drips, as they will show up if left to drip.

This will revitalise the timber's look and offer it protection moving forward. This process should be repeated roughly every 1-2 years.
