How to build a breakfast bar?

Thinking of putting a breakfast bar on my balcony, are there any products on the market anyone recommends that will fit onto the thick railing? Will it also be stable given the railing is round?

Our balcony is 5.2m long and we would be looking for a breakfast bar around 1.5m.

Also will we have any issues with the glass installing a bar?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about installing a breakfast bar.

Is this part of an apartment complex with a body corporate? If it is, getting permission to hang anything on the railing will be a challenge as it has to go through a committee or it could be that it is not allowed according to body corporate rules. If this is the case, I suggest looking at the Outdoor Coffee & Side Tables. There is also the option of choosing just the table if that's all your after.

Building a hanging table onto the existing steel frame could pose a challenge as it would need to be lightweight and strong at the same time. It would need to be safe and prevent anything on it from rolling over the sides. It would need to be able to withstand the weather, and it can only rely on the steel frame and must not touch the glass panels under any circumstance. Working with glass is dangerous, poor lifting and an accidental hit with a tool could cause it to shatter and cause injury.

Outside of body corporate rules, I would have a few concerns with attempting to attach things to that rounded railing.

Is there perhaps a surface on the house side of the balcony where you could install something along the lines of this Cafe-style breakfast bar or Outdoor breakfast bar?

I also have issues hanging things of a balcony and added that its round and glass it pushes it into a noooooo situation 😕 There would be nothing worse then added weight or forces all of a suddern shattering the glass.

I like the idea of a stand alone option, keeping in mind that whatever you use cannot be climbed upon to potentially get over the rail vy a child.

A heavy weighted thin breakfast bar on lockable wheels would be an valid option? Something that has a witdth of around 450mm and the same height as the rail but with weight at the base to help stop it getting easily tilted. Maybe play around with some sketches of ideas. I have built an outside bench that works well and also a bench seat on large castors that has stood up to the last couple of years weather with Jarah and yellow gum facing decking boards.

Thank you all for your feedback, it has made me reassess the risks and I’ve decided to park this idea for the time being.
