Plastic chairs where the insert comes off - what is the best glue not knowing what it is made of. So, is there a plastic that is normally used for living/dining room chairs?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
This Selleys 3mL All Plastics Glue would be the way to go. It works with most plastic types outside of Teflon, which is very unlikely to be what you have.
I'd give this a go.
