How to fix corroding shower screen aluminium frame?

I have a badly corroded shower screen frame. Was wondering whether it is possible to cut out the damaged section and replace with new material. Or am I better off to change the whole frame. I think the corrosion started with me using very harsh cleaning products to keep the glass clean.

From your pictures, it looks like the corrosion on your shower screen has gone beyond just surface damage. Since the chrome plating has failed and the aluminium frame beneath is also breaking down, any repair at this point would only be a temporary solution.

You could certainly try sanding or scraping the corroded areas back to bare aluminium, filling the damaged spots with an epoxy putty, and then recoating with a suitable spray paint. This might help you squeeze another couple of years of use from it, but it’s worth knowing that once water has penetrated the original coating, it’s very likely to find its way into any repair as well.

In my opinion, given the level of corrosion, the best long-term fix would be to replace the screen and frame altogether. While a repair might hold up for a short while, it’s unlikely to look great and won’t stop the corrosion from progressing. A new screen would give you an instant and lasting result, and you won’t be left with a frame that looks patched or continues to deteriorate. If you can measure the width between the two walls, I can assist with selecting a new screen.

Also, keep in mind that shower screens can be hazardous to work around. The glass panels are toughened but can still shatter if knocked, especially when the frame is weakened by corrosion. If you attempt any repair, always wear appropriate PPE, including safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, a long-sleeve shirt, trousers, and enclosed footwear.
