How to reseed lawn?

I am wanting to reseed my lawn. It definitely does not look like this after winter.

I am wondering what seed to use for the lawn type?

correct me if I’m wrong but I would:

-cut the lawn very low 

- aerate the lawn 

- seed

- cover with top soil and compost and sand mix? 
- leave to regrown?

To help with identifying your lawn, have a look at Common Lawn Types And How to Identify Them. It appears to be either Couch or Kikuyu, but it is hard to tell from this photo.

Can I ask you to pull out some grass, bringing the roots with it and lay it on a neutral background, then take some photos and upload them?

If you can locate a stolon, which is an above-ground runner, could you also pull it out and take a photo? This will help us to identify your specific lawn type so we can recommend a good seed mix that you can use.

Once we have identified your lawn type, the process you mentioned is exactly what you would do to reseed your lawn.
