How to lay deck planks between rain?

Hi braintrusts,

I need your advice.

We plan to install new wooden planks, but it is forecast to rain this coming week..

All the Josits are painted, as we wanted to protect the deck frame.

I am wondering whether it is possible to install the new planks between rains?

We have organised manpower, so I am having a dilemma whether I should/ shouldn't do it...

I really appreciate your advice on the matter.

Installing decking boards during a rainy week can be done, but it comes with some risks you should weigh carefully. 

Timber absorbs moisture when exposed to rain, which makes the boards swell. Once the weather dries out, the timber will contract again, often leaving larger gaps between boards than intended.

The best practice is always to install the boards when they are dry, and the forecast is clear for at least a couple of days. This allows the timber to settle into its natural state and makes it easier to space the boards correctly. 

If you proceed during intermittent rain, you will need to store your decking boards under cover and keep them as dry as possible before installation. Wiping off any moisture before fixing them in place is important, as is leaving adequate expansion gaps, since wet timber will shrink as it dries.

If you do decide to go ahead between showers because labour is already organised, the project can still be successful, provided you take extra care. 

Just be prepared to apply a decking oil or sealer once the timber has had a chance to dry out properly, ideally after a few days of good weather. This finishing step is crucial to lock out moisture and reduce the risk of mould, warping, and long-term damage.

Ultimately, if you want the most reliable outcome, waiting for a dry spell is the safer choice. However, if delays are difficult, careful handling of the boards and timely sealing afterwards can allow you to move forward without too many compromises.
