How to replace tap spindle?

Hey community!

Need some help, recently bought a house, trying to change the tap spindle in the bathroom but seems to be super worn out. It's on the "Hot" tap spindle side.

The grip of the hexagon socket is totally worn out and when trying to adjust seems really tight to even budge or move.

Been trying to sort this out as I have a replacement on hand.

Would it be more ideal to fix from going from under the sink and removing completely or is there a quick fix, some tools I could use?

Any suggestions would help or definitely a solution would be much better!

Ps. Hot water does come out. Some times droplet leaks after use of hot water.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @j_m. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about removing a spindle.

It looks like the hex on the spindle is almost completely stripped, so at this point, a standard spanner won’t grip it properly anymore. What you’ll want to use is something like multigrip pliers, or better still, a pair of locking pliers (vice grips). Locking pliers let you adjust the grip pressure and then clamp firmly onto the spindle so you can turn it without slipping.

There’s no better access from underneath the sink. The spindle has to come out from the top. If it’s really seized or you can’t get a solid bite with the pliers, it might be worth getting a plumber or handy person in to avoid damaging the surrounding fittings.
