How to stop grass coming under fence?

Hi everyone!

I’m working on creating a garden edge along my fence with my neighbor, and I’ve removed the grass from a 40 cm wide strip along the fence to prepare it for planting. However, our fence doesn't go underground, and my neighbor has grass same as me on his side. I’m concerned that their grass might spread onto my side of the garden, i will add mulch after, would this be enough or should i put a root barrier along the fence? I don't want to bother but alson dont want to keep removing grass and have to fix it later on...

Can anyone suggest the best way to prevent this? Should I put something underground or create a barrier to stop the grass from propagating into my garden? I want to make sure I don’t have to deal with unwanted grass growth later on.

If you have any advice, I’d really appreciate it!

Also note I'm planning to add a root barrier between my edge and my grass that's for esthetic too

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about your garden edge.

It is possible to install a root barrier, but it will require you to dig quite deep to install it. Then there is the top section where the grass can creep over obstacles such as garden edging. You'll need to install a buffer between your fence and the beginning of your garden. You can cover this section with weed mat and mulch to control the spread of weeds. It does not have to be very big, but it has to be enough to halt the progress of your neighbour's lawn.

Using chemical deterrents is also possible however it will affect the plants that you and your neighbour will be putting in. To get a dominant planting area, I suggest having a look at this guide - How to build a simple raised garden bed by @Adam_W. This will protect it from any lawn from growing over it and it will provide a bit of security for your plants.

What type of root barrier products would you recommend? Also how deep would you recommend? I was thinking it could come up at the top just under that fence to also block the grass from coming over at the top.

For the dominant plant, not sure i see the link with the raised garden sorry.

Hello @victordot1985

I suggest looking at the Jack 300mm x 8m Garden Edging. You can dig 200mm deep and leave 100 out of the ground to serve as a garden barrier. If the link is not working, I suggest typing in How to build a simple raised garden bed in the search bar. The guide is written by @Adam_W.

This simple raised garden bed will be more advantageous for your side as the sleepers act like barriers to anything coming from the other side of your fence.

Thanks @EricL , i got the garden edging you suggested, it was a little big so i cut it to my need but it looks good.
