How to replace flyscreen mesh with pop rivets?

Hi everyone,

I need to replace the flyscreen mesh on a window. The mesh is held inside an aluminium frame, and it looks like the frame is fixed together with pop rivets instead of just spline and clips. I’ve attached photos for reference.

I’ve read some discussions on this before, but I’m still not fully understanding the right process to remove the old mesh and install the new one, especially since the frame is riveted.

Could someone please explain:

• The steps to remove and replace the mesh, given that the frame is riveted.

• The tools and materials I’ll need (e.g. drill bits for rivets, spline tool, mesh type, etc.).

• Any good videos or guides you recommend for beginners.

There’s unfortunately not a universal way to replace the mesh in riveted aluminium security frames, as different manufacturers assemble their panels differently. From your photos, it looks like the rivets are likely part of what’s holding the side panel in place.

The best first step is to carefully drill out a couple of the rivets on one side using a drill driver with about a 3.5mm drill bit. Drill through the centre hole of the rivet, and it should release. Once you’ve done that, check whether the side panel will come away. If it does, you’ll be able to access and replace the mesh. If not, then it may have an additional fixing method we’ll need to identify.

At this stage, all you’ll need is a drill driver, a 3.5mm drill bit and safety glasses. Once you have the frame open, please post back some updated photos and we can guide you step by step through re-meshing and putting it all back together.
