How to treat dry red leaves on Photinia Robusta?

Need some advise on photinia robustas. Planted 5 of these 2 months ago. They looked healthy enough till last week. It started getting pretty windy since last week and today I have noticed that the red leaves started looking brown, brittle and dried out. Some red leaves looks like they are rotting from the inside (they look wet even though there is no water on them). The green leaves look fine for now. 

 Appreciate any advice!

Why the Red Leaves Are Affected

New growth on Photinia emerges as red leaves, and these are more tender than the older green foliage. They lose moisture quickly in wind and sun, so they are the first to look scorched, brittle, or even water-soaked before browning off. Since the green leaves look healthy, the plant is still functioning, but the new shoots are the vulnerable ones.

Possible Causes

Wind stress is the most likely factor since you noticed the change right after a windy week. The dry wind strips moisture faster than the roots can supply, especially in young plants that haven’t yet established a strong root system. In addition, transplant stress is still at play, because two months is a short time for root establishment. A second possibility is fungal leaf spot (Photinia is prone to this), but your description of “wet-looking then drying” spots suggests windburn and desiccation more than disease.

What You Can Do

Water deeply but less often so the roots grow down, not just across the mulch surface. In windy conditions, check soil moisture a little more frequently. Mulch is good, but make sure it isn’t pushed up against the base of the stems. If the site is very exposed, temporary wind protection (hessian or shade cloth barrier) can make a big difference while they establish. Avoid feeding heavily right now, since that will push out more soft red growth that will just get scorched again. Instead, wait until spring to give a balanced slow-release fertilizer.

What to Expect

Some of the red leaves will likely crisp up and drop, which is normal under stress. The key is that your green mature leaves are holding well. Once the plant strengthens, it will push out new growth. If you keep up with consistent watering and provide a little wind shelter, it should bounce back.
