How to paint decorative unprimed area of Hume door?

Hi,

I have just picked up some custom sized rebated Hume double doors which I ordered through Bunnings. I paid for them to be primed but was surprised to find that the decorative, recessed area on the face is not primed and appears to be exposed MDF (see picture) as it has a corky feel.

Would it be ok to paint this area with the same oil-based primer that I am using for the rest of the door? I'm a bit disappointed to be honest, as this recessed area will never be truly smooth

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your door.

Yes, it would be ok to paint this area with the same oil-based primer that you are using for the rest of the door.

Once you've painted the primer on and it has fully cured, I propose doing a light sand of the cut channel. This will slightly smoothen the surface before you put on the first top coat. Once the top coat has cured you can run the sandpaper over the cut channel again and you should have a much better finish. By the time you put the final coat on the surface should fairly smooth.

I just wanted to update you that I've contacted Hume doors regarding the manufacturing of these doors and the non-primed rebated section. I've provided your feedback, and I'll also flag this with our merchandise team to look into.

As always, if you are not happy with the finish on the doors, we'd be more than happy to return them for you. I've also spoken with Nancy at the Special Order desk at Bunnings Keperra. She is very keen to assist with providing any products free of charge that are needed to resolve the situation, whether that be the primer, brushes, or sandpaper.

If you'd like to visit the store and discuss the situation, I'm confident she'll be able to assist.

Thanks very much Mitchell for your help and engagement. So do you think they shouldn't have arrived with that finish? I'm still not sure if that's normal or not.... but it doesn't feel quite right.

Hi @austirob,

I've confirmed with Hume doors that all of the Humecraft HMC2 doors come with a non-primed routed section. I do note on the Bunnings webpage under features: Routed doors are supplied with raw, unprimed routs and edges. The front and back faces are primed, but the doors are not painted. All raw areas should be sealed or painted before installation.

I've passed this feedback on to our team so they can review how they can be more accurately depicted.
