How to turn hammer function off on Ryobi hammer drill?

Hi - I just bought a Ryobi Hammer drill kit RPD18.

The problem is that no matter what setting I use - hammer setting, drill setting or any of the 22 torque settings, the hammer function is permanently on. So I can't drill a hole in wood or drive in a screw without the hammer function operating.

Is this how it is meant to work? If so it seems strange to me that the hammer function can't be turned off.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Stefanoto. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about hammer drills.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience; that sounds faulty to me. I have that model drill and hammer function is only engaged when you select the little hammer symbol on the black clutch/torque ring. It certainly shouldn't be operating all the time. If your drill is still within warranty, please return it with your reciept to your nearest store and I trust our team will swap it over for you.

So when you use yours, not set to the little hammer, it sounds and behaves just like a normal drill?

Yes, normal drill all around unless you select the little hammer for hammer mode, @Stefanoto. It shouldn't be hammering in any other mode.

I just discovered something interesting - if I turn the selector ring all the way down to 1 or 2, the hammer mode turns off. If I set it to hammer again it does hammer, but then the hammering does not disconnect when I turn the ring to drill or screw. I can make it turn off again by lowering the torque setting right down again. It still seems to be a fault though ...

I've just double-checked my drill @Stefanoto and it doesn't function as such. No need to fiddle with the selector ring to get the hammer to turn off. Literally just the hammer icon for hammer mode. It's definitely faulty.
