How to prepare damaged walls for repainting?

I have never done these type of repairs before so wouldn't know where to start?

The top pic is in the lounge area. A large painting was attached to a piece of metal frame which I removed and this was the end result.

The bottom pic is in the bathroom but I have no idea how it got that way.

These are repairs to be done pre prep before repainting.

I have sanding blocks, a pole sander and spakfilla. Not sure if any of these things will be useful in the repair?

I'd suggest starting by having a read through the best advice article How do you fix plasterboard with damaged paper?

Your sanding blocks will be essential, and the pole sander will be handy if they are in hard-to-reach areas.

Spakfilla can likely be used, but a plaster topping compound, such as Gyprock CSR 2.25kg Less Mess Topping Compound would get a finer finish and tends to be easier to work with.

Start by tidying up the paper, removing any loose bits and giving the edges a light sand to remove any hard edges. Once this prep has been done, apply your topping compound using a joint knife, trying to keep it as smooth as possible.

Once dry, sand it with your sanding sponge or pole sander, allow it to dry, then prime and paint.

I think this is the best bet to repair this prior to painting. I have never done this kind of job before in all my DIY jobs but will give it a go or get someone to come and do the job if I am unable to do it.
