How to create texture on ceiling?

I’m mid project and need some advice. 

we had peeling plaster and paint in a bedroom on the ceiling.  I’ve removed all the bits that were peeling and have used a filler to patch the holes. However I’m keen to recreate the texture of the rest of the ceiling which I believe is “orange peel” or “fine orange peel”.  Is this something I require a special paint for? Or a special roller? Or do I apply some other agent pre painting?

Plaster itself is smooth, and the “orange peel” effect you’re seeing is actually created during painting. When a roller is used, the paint leaves behind tiny peaks and stipples as it’s pulled up from the surface. There isn’t a special paint or additive that produces this look, it simply builds up over time with multiple coats.

To recreate the texture, I’d suggest using a roller with a longer nap, around 12 mm. First, apply up to three coats of paint just over the patched areas to build up some stipple. Once that’s dry, repaint the whole ceiling with two full coats. By the time those repaired spots have five coats in total, they should have developed a texture very similar to the rest of the ceiling.
