What plants are best for a covered porch?

Have a self-watering plant pot and am wondering what kind of plants to put in it as it will be on a side porch under a metal roof. the type of plant i'm looking for is the type that will deter mosquitoes and others like them and want it to provide a bit of privacy.

Can you please tell us your general location so that we can suggest plants that are suitable to your particular area. Several plants are known to naturally deter mosquitoes and insects because of the aromatic oils they release. One of the most popular and effective is citronella, often grown in clumps or used in pots since its strong lemony scent masks the smells that attract mosquitoes. Lavender is another excellent choice, as its fragrance repels mosquitoes, moths, and flies while also being pleasant for people.

Basil and mint are useful because they release strong scents when their leaves are disturbed, which keeps mosquitoes and some flying insects away. Marigolds contain pyrethrum, a natural compound used in many insect repellents, and are effective near entryways or garden beds. Rosemary and sage can also help, particularly if you burn them outdoors in a fire pit, since the smoke further deters insects.

are basil and mint the only ones I have to mess with ?? others can just be left to it?? I got a couple of large self watering pots and wonder what is best to use. thanks for that . I am in Caboolture area

Thank you for that added information about your location. Along with the plants we’ve already discussed, there are a few other great choices you might like to consider for keeping mosquitoes and insects away in Caboolture’s warm climate. Lemongrass is a fantastic option, as it naturally produces citronella oil and thrives in pots. Catnip is also very effective, with studies showing it can repel mosquitoes even better than some commercial repellents.

Lemon balm is another easy-to-grow choice that releases a fresh citrus scent when touched and works well in containers. You might also enjoy scented geraniums, particularly the lemon-scented or citronella varieties, which not only look lovely but also discourage mosquitoes. For something a little different, eucalyptus in a large pot provides a strong insect-repelling fragrance, and if you have space, a tea tree shrub is a hardy native option that helps keep bugs at bay.

Here is the list of plants that we've suggested:

Cat Nip
Lemon balm

Eucalyptus
Tea tree shrub

The only plants that will grow like a shrub is the Tea tree shrub and its close cousin the Black tea tree. Otherwise, you may need to consider a different type of cover if you are looking for some privacy as well. All these plants will work in a self-watering pot

I sure will. Can't grow anything in the ground ( I am in a rental). but could have a trellis type thing next to the porch if need be.
