A bare garden was transformed into a beautiful sanctuary with garden beds, water features, new turf, outdoor entertaining area, and a variety of plants for both its owners and local wildlife to enjoy.
The project
We had a large bare area of garden and decided that we wanted to encourage all sorts of wildlife into the garden including insects, bees, birds, butterflies and dragonflies.
A professional designer completed the plan and then we set about building the walls and edges. It was a huge job but done over several months. We also propagated many of the plants ourselves to save on cost.
Water features were included to attract birds, frogs and dragonflies. Lots of smaller shrubs provided habitat for small birds.
The final result has been well worth the effort. We have a garden full of bees, dragonflies, butterflies, lizards as well as birds of all shapes and sizes. No chemicals are used anywhere to avoid harm to the wildlife. The garden is a source of much pleasure and relaxation.
Steps
Step 1
We employed an earthmover to come in and clear the area. Then we placed loose bricks out to mark in the garden beds and planted trees.
Step 2
The bricks were set in concrete allowing for room for soil and turf. We planted shrubs and mulched the garden beds as we went.
Step 3
We installed turf, planted out many more shrubs, placed seats around the garden and installed several bird feeders, and a large water bowl with fountain.
Step 4
An outside dining area under shade trees is great for entertaining.
Step 5
Lots of places to sit and relax.
Step 6
Water features for birds to bathe and insects to visit.
Step 7
Places for bower birds, whip birds and blue tongue lizards.
Spring blossoms for bees.
Milly the cat enjoys the garden but never touches the birds.
