How to install rangehood external duct?

Hey DIYers

I got a rangehood installed in my kitchen which is a recirculating the smoke. But I need to install ducted rangehood so that the smoke can go outside. My house is double story so roof ducting is not possible and it may need a hole on the sidewall for duct and vent. There is no house on the side wall so I am lucky I guess.

Overhead cabinet is not too deep and may need some modifications for ducting.

I need to buy another 60 cm rangehood which has air outlet too. There is electric connection so I dont need a new electric connection.

I just installed hybrid flooring in my house so I am confident I can pull this off too. Just need more information from the experts.

Main challenge is too drill a hole in the wall.

Can you take a landscape photo to the right so we can see the distance from the rangehood to the wall and options to run the ducting.

Thank you for your question. We'd be happy to assist, but we'll need a few extra details.

Where in relation to the eventual location of the outside vent is the rangehood going to be installed? Have you defined a path for the ducting? Will it go through the ceiling?

Is the external wall rendered fibre cement sheeting? Or is it rendered block?

If it is fibre cement sheeting, then assuming you have a 150mm duct, you would use this Sutton Tools 152mm TCT Multi-Purpose Seamless Holesaw. If the duct is larger or smaller, you would use a TCT holesaw in the correct diameter.

If it is block, then you would need to core drill through the block using a Core Drill with the correct-sized core drill bit, such as this Full Boar Ø102mm Diamond Core Drill Bit. If this is the case, I would suggest contacting a company that specialises in concrete coring, as this is not something I would class as a beginner or even intermediate D.I.Y. task.

I just did one of these projects a few months ago but never took any photos. I do have another one coming up, but through a standard brick veneer wall I'll record the steps for.

Assuming the rangehood is rear venting, the first step is to measure and triple check the location of the hole on the external wall for any obstructions.
Next is to open the internal wall as required to the inside of the external wall. Now you can see if there is anything like plumbing, electrical etc that may need to be relocated.
I then used by pneumatic SDS hammer drill to make a 10mm hole dead centre of the vent opening.
I was installing this type with auto-opening veins and used it to mark the circular cut out.
I used a sharpened cold chisel to chip away the render through to the block wall. Then used the 10mm SDS bit (I only use 4-cut type) and made a series of holes drilling outside in. Never drill from the inside out as the potential to blow a brick out and cause extended damage is very high. Internal damage will never be seen.
I used a fine point SDS chisel and the drill in strop rotation mode to carefully remove the centre cut out.

The rest you can probably figure out by the sounds of your skillset. Especially if your exterior wall is rendered foam block, which will make the job super simple.

Do you think the plumbing or wiring could be through the bricks? I mean inside. I can cut the plasterboard and remove insulation to check the plumbing and wiring for relocation. Just concerned about something inside it.

which stud finder is good to check it?

Services wont be through the prick itself @yazB Any will be clearly visible between the inside of the external brick and the plasterboard cut out.

Hi @yazB,

The Ryobi Stud Finder with AC Detection is a good option for checking behind plasterboard before cutting. It can detect timber studs, metal, and live electrical wiring up to about 38 mm deep.
