How to prepare garden for turf?

Hello 👋 

I’m wanting to lay instant turf for my front yard but I need some advice to handle the following items in my front yard. Can I lay turf on top of them? 

Secondly, can anyone suggest on the soil that needs to go under the instant turf? I heard that good quality of soil needs to be filled under the instant turf for best outcome.

Thank you for your questions about preparing for turf in your yard.

When you say instant turf, are you referring to artificial turf? Or turf slabs?

Regardless of which type, they can not be laid over the top of these pipes. They would need to be cut around them.

If you are installing artificial turf, you would need to create a compacted base using around 100mm of road base, then lay a 20mm layer of crusher dust over the top before your artificial turf. Check out How To Lay Synthetic Turf for some guidance.

If you are installing turf slabs, then it is best to add a layer around 100mm thick of top dressing soil before laying your turf. This soil is great for levelling and is high in nutrients to help your turf establish roots quickly. It can be purchased in individual bags like this Scotts Lawn Builder Organic Lawn Soil Topdress & Underlay or in bulk bags through your local store's Special Orders desk.
