How to replace seating washer?

Hi,

I've got this old Caroma toilet flush and recently it is leaking ie i can see water dripping into the flushing hole throught the central square section. i guess i need to replace the seating washer or seal? i manage to detach the arms but i could not get the whole square section out. think the whole thing is 1 piece. i am also unable to get the section with the flush levers out to have more space to work with. i also check the external back bottom, the cistern is fasten onto the toilet seat with 2 wing nuts is not flush pipe nut.

any ideas how i can fix the leaky thing? thanks.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your seating washer.

I suspect that there is a way to take it apart, the only reason I suggest this is because the manufacturer would have had to be able to take the flushing arm out and place the seating washer in. I propose having a close look at the little wings on the side of the flushing mechanism and investigating the flushing button assembly itself. There could possibly be a method to unclip the buttons and the arms in one go.

I suggest using the Kinetic Seating Washers - 2 Pack, in my experience the red one is the most compatible with older systems. For the inlet valve I suggest going to the special orders desk and ordering a Ballcock Washer #4 from Fix-A-Loo product number 235268 if you wish to replace the inlet valve washers.

I dont know the names of the parts but I believe the 'little wings' you mentioned is the plastic flap which closes inwards whenever I press the flushing buttons (as shown in yellow arrow)? This flag is joined to the whole flushing mechanism and I still need to find a way to take out the whole piece (red arrow). I suspect this whole piece is secured via the wing nuts (external) which I unscrew will be able to take this whole piece out?

I can see the leak into the toilet by looking down the square part and I need to find a way to remove the whole thing to change the seal/washer underneath it (green arrow).

If you are replacing the sealing O ring under the flushing mechanism, I recommend engaging the services of a professional plumber as this will require the disassembly of the entire cistern (which technically counts as plumbing work). My suggestion only involved the seating washer which is the Kinetic Seating Washers - 2 Pack. The larger internal O rings is a bit more involved. If you are only removing the flushing arm, then it may be possible to take it apart without removing the entire flushing mechanism assembly.

If I want to try DIY first, can I get the sealing O ring under the flushing mechanism at Bunnings? What is the part you would suggest?

I did a DIY in another Caroma toilet (different model) and it worked.

If I fail, I will engage a plumber.

It is difficult to tell what kind of O ring you have and the only way to find out is to remove the flushing assembly. I can't find a parts list guide for your particular toilet cistern. I suggest giving Caroma a call on 13 14 16 or email them on enquiries@gwagroup.com. Their technical team might be able to track down the original parts manual for your cistern.
