How to stain a deck?

Hi, I've been putting off staining our deck. But it's time. I think it was previously stained with an oil based stain...I think. I really want to be able to do this the easy way if possible. Can I use a water based stain on the deck now?  What do I need to do to get this done. It's quite a large deck so will take some time.  What preparation do I need to do?

Hi @LeopoldProjects.

You can use a water-based stain over an oil-based stain, provided you prepare the surface correctly. 

For the Cabot's range, you would do the following:

For exterior surfaces, clean with Cabot's Deck Clean following label instructions, then allow the timber to fully dry. Test if the surface is ready for coating by sprinkling water on the timber. If the water beads on the surface, repeat the application of Cabot's Deck Clean. If water is absorbed into the timber, it is ready for coating. For a more transparent look, sand the timber back to bare then clean with Cabot's Deck Clean before coating.

Since you mentioned it’s quite a large deck, it might be helpful to tackle it in sections. Say, one half at a time, so the stain doesn’t dry before you finish blending each area. Aim for mild weather conditions: not too hot, no rain forecast, and ideally out of direct sunlight while you’re working.
