How to install electrical conduit above ground?

Hi

When I laid the slab for the pool filter I included underground conduit for future power to a patio to the back left of the pic (next year).

The conduit is approx 30cm deep where it comes out and I will be laying a slab to join the pool and filter slabs over it (area dug out).

My questions are:

• do i need to dig a 60cm trench all along the front of the pool slab to the fence, or
• can i install above ground conduit along the front edge of the pool slab and then wrap that around the far edge of the pool

Since this work involves running electrical cables, the key point here is that a licensed electrician will ultimately need to install and connect the wiring, so it’s best to speak with the electrician who’ll be doing the job before you proceed any further. In most cases, electricians prefer to run the conduit themselves so they can be confident it meets Australian Standards and installation requirements, particularly around depth, protection, and accessibility. If the conduit you’ve already installed is only about 30cm deep, that’s shallower than the typical minimum depth required for underground electrical runs, which is usually closer to 450–600mm, depending on the location and surface type.

As for installing conduit above ground along the front edge of the pool slab, it can be possible to run surface-mounted conduit as long as it’s securely fixed, protected from physical damage, and UV-rated for outdoor exposure. However, compliance depends heavily on the site layout, conduit type, and where it’s positioned relative to foot traffic and pool areas. Because of that, it’s really something that needs to be confirmed with your electrician. They’ll be able to tell you whether that route would meet the wiring rules and if any extra protection, such as mechanical shielding, would be required. In short, your best approach is to discuss your plan with your electrician first and let them confirm whether your proposed setup will be suitable and compliant before you pour the next section of slab.
