How to paint powder coated steel gates?

Hi. I have powder coated steel (hollow tube) gates which I’d like to paint. The quote to blast and re-powder coat was too expensive and I’m working out if I can do it myself just by painting. See pics there’s a little bit of rust to deal with.

Looking for advice on best way. Thanks

Thank you for sharing your question about painting powder coated steel. I suggest having a quick look at this discussion - How to remove paint from powder coated windows by @Sheddy. If you are planning to re-paint the entire gate it will be necessary to sand the entire surface in order for the new primer to take hold. Any portion missed will result in the primer not adhering properly to the powder coated surface. I suggest using a 180grit to 240grit to scuff the powder coated surface. Please note that it is also important to sand away all the rust spots on the gate surface.

Once the gate has been fully sanded the surface must be cleaned thoroughly with Selleys Sugar Soap Wall Cleaning Wipes - 25 Pack to remove all the sanding dust on the surface. I then recommend using the White Knight Rust Guard painting system. I suggest using White Knight 0.125L Rust Guard Rust Converter followed by the White Knight Rust Guard Grey Quick Dry True Bite Primer Paint - 4L and a topcoat of White Knight 4L White Satin Rust Guard Quick Dry Advanced Enamel Paint which can be tinted to your preferred colour.

My best advice is to invest in a Wagner W350 Wood And Metal Paint Sprayer in order to get a brush free finish on your gate surface.
