How to soundproof patio?

I have a covered patio looking at the pool (see picture). I would like to enclose the area for winter and summer. I would like bifold doors (I think) for the end that is nearest the pool, and a wall (or similar) on the neighbours side. I would like to be relatively sound proof (keep neighbour happy) but maybe have the option to open the wall side up and let the breeze through. Sound proofing is the key issue here. Suggestions greatly appreciated 🙂

Looking at what you are trying to achieve, it sounds like this is really a project that involves enclosing the patio with a permanent structure if soundproofing is a priority and you want to incorporate bifold doors. Temporary solutions like outdoor screens, curtains, or blinds will not provide meaningful sound insulation, and they cannot accommodate bifold doors effectively.

For a proper soundproofed patio, you would typically construct a timber frame from the ceiling down to the floor around the perimeter. The frame can then be filled with sound-absorbing insulation before adding internal lining boards. On the exterior, you can clad it with weatherproof materials to match the rest of the house. The bifold doors can be framed into the structure where you want them to go. You can design the wall on the neighbour’s side so it has the option to open up, such as with sliding panels or removable sections, while still maintaining sound control when closed.

Because this is essentially creating a permanent room, you will need to check with your local council to see if you require planning approval or building permits. Soundproofing is more effective when the structure is continuous because gaps or temporary walls will let a lot of noise escape. A well-sealed timber-framed construction is the most practical approach.

It is worth noting that while this project will give you the flexibility to enjoy your patio in summer and winter, it involves significant work including framing, insulation, cladding, and door installation. If you want, you could consider consulting a builder or carpenter with experience in outdoor rooms to ensure the structure is robust, weatherproof, and achieves the soundproofing you are looking for.
