How to treat Heliconia leaves going brown?

Hi,

Planted some Heliconias on the weekend.  Fed them some slow release fertiliser and gave a good watering.  It has rained a little here in Brisbane since.  Moisture meter is reading 'moist' for these.  They get afternoon sun.  Just wondering if they have a bit of shock and too much water.  What is the best way to care for them from here on?

Some of them already had the brown spots on them when delivered.

Heliconias generally prefer full sun to part shade, as this encourages strong growth and vibrant flowers. That said, in hot climates like Brisbane, intense afternoon sun can stress the plants and scorch the leaves, especially when they are newly planted. In your situation, having a metal fence directly behind them can make the heat even more intense, because metal absorbs and radiates additional warmth onto the plants. This can contribute to leaf browning or stress while the Heliconias are still establishing. 

Some of the brown spots you noticed may also be due to transplant shock or minor damage during delivery, which is common and usually not a serious concern. To help your plants settle in, keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and consider providing some temporary shade during the hottest part of the day until they are well-established. 

Trim off any damaged leaves if you like, but leave healthy foliage to support recovery. Once established, Heliconias are usually hardy and can tolerate full sun even in warm climates, and they should start producing fresh, healthy growth.
