How to replace basin tap mixer?

If I do this replacement as a DIY project, what steps do I need to follow, what tools do I need, and what things should I consider? Do I need to turn off the main water switch?

Do I need a plumber for this kind of project?

Replacing an entire tap mixer is considered plumbing work, so it’s best to have a licensed plumber handle the job. As a DIYer, you’re generally only permitted to replace washers or seals, but once you’re disconnecting and reinstalling the mixer, which involves the water supply lines connected to the wall, that’s classified as plumbing work.

In terms of replacement options, the mixer you have looks fairly standard, so if you’re simply wanting to swap it for a similar model, something like the Estilo 40mm Chrome WELS 4 Star 7.5L/min Allana Lever Sink Mixer would work well. Just make sure the spout length suits your basin. Ideally, the water stream should fall roughly in the centre of the bowl. Of course, if you’d like to update the look, there are many styles available, from modern square designs to classic curved spouts, and most standard basin mixers will fit your setup.

If you do hire a plumber, they’ll handle shutting off the water supply (usually at the main valve), disconnecting the old fittings, sealing the new one, and testing for leaks. The whole process is typically quick and straightforward.
