How to fill gap under Colorbond fence?

trying to work out what the best solution would be to fill in gap under the colorbond fence, I will eventually be laying river stones along that side of the fence and the gap creates an issue - i need something to fill it so the stones don't go through the fence onto the neighbours lawn, any ideas please? thank you under fence solutions.jpg

Hi @kelihtr,

Thank you for your question about the gap under your fence.

I'd recommend installing a timber sleeper barrier along the base of your fence. You can use Jack 450mm Heavy Duty Steel Sleeper Peg Flat Stakes with 25mm Galvanised Type 17 Hex Head Timber Screws to fix the sleepers in place.

This would be a simple way of creating a barrier to prevent your river stones from sliding under the fence.

thanks for your response, the issue I have with timber sleepers is that they are 200mm high which means a lot of digging and there is a lot of concrete under the posts so then I would have to cut it, if it was done when the fence was done that would have been so much easier. I don't think you can get timber sleepers at 100mm high? I was thinking what about concrete garden edging or something similar this would mean I would just be able to level off the sand and put the edging straight down and would work when laying river stones?

Hi @kelihtr,

You can certainly use something smaller, like garden edging; you just need to ensure it is well supported, with a stake every 600mm or so.

Something like this Icon Plastics 100mm x 10m Jarrah Garden Edge fixed in place with Icon Plastics 380 x 26mm Jarrah Garden Edge Multi Pegs would certainly be a good option.

There are also timber options similar to the sleepers. Our timber suppliers are regional, so I can't point to a specific product, but if you search for H4 plinth, there are usually timbers that are around 100x25 or 100x16 that you could use for this. As long as they are H4 treated, then they are fine for this purpose. They can be fixed in place by driving timber stakes into the soil and screwing the edging to them.

thanks Jacob, the 100x25 sleepers H4 treated would work I think with garden stakes, definitely less work than the bigger sleepers! really appreciate all these options, the soil is mainly sand so I will need to test it out first I think, thank you

If you're concerned about the strength the sand will give, you can always use longer stakes and drive them in deeper.
