how to attach skirting to plaster and brick walls - can it be glued?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @juliemac. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about installing skirting.Construction adhesive will go a long way towards securing your skirting boards to plaster or brick walls. However, it’s generally best to use mechanical fixings as well, just to make sure the boards stay put even if the adhesive bond weakens over time.
For a solid installation, drill into the wall at several points along where the skirting will sit, insert plastic wall plugs, then screw through the skirting into the plugs. Once everything’s fixed in place, you can fill over the screw heads with putty, then prime and paint your skirting for a clean finish. These STAHL Masonry Kit 7mm Drill With 50mm Green Wall Plugs are handy as they include the drill bit, plugs and correctly sized screws.
Here's a helpful guide: How to install skirting boards. Note that it focuses on a timber-frame wall rather than masonry, but still offers several tips on installation. Please let me know if you have any questions.Mitchell
Thanks Mitchell, that’s a great help! Much appreciated. 👍☺️
You can use a high-quality construction adhesive, but it helps to use a few masonry nails or plug and screw it in places where the wall isn't perfectly flat to hold it tight while the glue cures.
