How to close an unused door frame and build a wall?

Hi there,

I’m hoping to get some advice on how to close up an unused doorway — basically removing frame and surrounds, then plastering it back so it’s just a flat wall again. The 'door' that is currently there is a thin piece of MDF thats been nailed shut.

Could you please let me know what materials I’d need and the best way to go about it?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about closing up an unused door.

A similar question was asked a while back, I suggest having a quick look at the discussion - How to remove a door and repair the wall by @tteres. The general steps are to remove the door frame and build a wall frame in its place. The timber to be used depends on the size of the timber studs you currently have in your wall. As for the wall covering you simply match the thickness of the plasterboard that was used. 

Please note, if your home was built around the 1970's or 1980's, I suggest having your walls checked for asbestos before you begin taking it apart. If the tests are positive, you'll need the services of an asbestos removal specialist. But if the results are negative, then you can continue with your renovation plans.
