Alternatives to bagging brick wall before painting?

We have a small brick wall under the bbq that we want to paint. Not a fan of painted brick look so thought we would get it bagged but hard to find someone to do a small job. Are there alternatives to cover the bricks prior to painting? I have seen a recommendation for Polyfilla Professional Exterior Brick and Render

 Or would a product such as  DULUX texture full cover do the job?

Thank you for your question about alternatives to bagging your brick BBQ surround.

While Polyfilla Exterior Brick and Render Masonry is a product you could use, it is not really designed as a standalone render, rather as a filler product for patching up damaged render and smaller masonry repairs.

If you were looking to render the brick in a traditional way, you could use a product like this Dunlop Multipurpose Acrylic Render, which is designed for this purpose and is much more economical in larger quantities. If you wanted to render the brick, you can check out our series on How To Render for some guidance.

Personally, I think the Dulux Texture Full Cover Exterior Paint would be a great option as it is a combined render and paint which can be applied with a roller, which is much easier without much rendering or plastering experience.

You'll need to start by giving the bricks a good clean with soapy water and a scrubbing brush to remove any dirt or built-up grime. This will ensure you get maximum adhesion between the product and the surface beneath.

Once clean, apply the Dulux Texture Paint Primer using a roller with a Texture Roller Cover, allow it to dry, then apply your Dulux Texture Full Cover Exterior Paint and work it in with a Dunlop Render Tool Plastic Float as per the application instructions found on the Texture Full Cover Roll On page.
