Would a box hedge be too close to house?

Hi Bunnings

I have been thinking of having a box hedge down the side of the house. Ive attached a rendered pic as well as what it looks like now. As you can see there is very little room and Im also worried that the roots will go too deep. I was thiking of half burining a planeter box but I think its only 25cm wide as far as possible planting area. Just wondering if you think thats possible? Have other people tried doing half buried planter box?

A bit of a squeeze even with Dwarf Boxwood.

Dwarf Japanese Box grows about 60cm x 60cm so you should be OK to keep the width under control.

As @AlanM52 mentioned, it’s a bit of a tight squeeze for that spot. I’d be cautious about planting anything directly against the foundation of your home. While box hedge roots are generally non-invasive and unlikely to damage the wall, the narrow space means the plants may struggle to thrive.

Container planting could be an option. You could certainly half-submerge some planters into the ground. Try removing a bit of soil, finding planters that fit within your 25cm width, and sinking them halfway down. This will give the roots a defined growing area and help manage water drainage. It’s definitely possible, but how well the hedge will grow in that confined space will depend on factors like light, soil quality, and airflow.
