How to encourage roses to flower?

Hi Team,

I bought two roses in early spring...one is a climbing one and another Pierre...forgot the whole name. I planted them in ground bed in garden. They look healthy. But no flower so far. What I should do to encourage it to flower? I fertilise them with my regular seasol fertilizer for the garden and last week I have used one potash liquid fertiliser.

It’s quite normal for newly planted roses to take time before flowering. In their first season, they focus on developing strong roots and stems rather than producing blooms, as it takes a lot of energy for them to bloom. Once established, they’ll naturally start flowering more reliably.

Roses need at least six hours of direct sunlight each day to bloom well. If they’re in a shaded position, they may grow healthy foliage but fail to produce buds. Making sure they’re in an open, sunny spot with good air circulation is a good first step.

While Seasol is excellent for giving your roses a boost, it’s not a complete fertiliser. Using a balanced slow-release fertiliser designed for roses, such as this Scotts Osmocote Roses, Gardenias, Azaleas And Camellias Controlled Release Fertiliser would be a better option for promoting strong growth and flowering. You can feed every eight or so weeks during the growing season and use potash occasionally to boost flower and stem strength.

Water deeply once or twice a week to keep the soil evenly moist, and avoid shallow, frequent watering. Lightly prune to remove dead growth and shape the plant, but don’t cut heavily in the first year.

With consistent sunlight, watering, and feeding, your roses will be set up for success. By next season, they’ll be well established and ready to produce a full flush of beautiful blooms.
