How to refresh laminate kickboards?

We have a 24yrold vinyl wrap kitchen which has seen better days!

can’t afford a new kitchen, so have removed remaining vinyl wrap (not much as it cracked and peeled a while ago). Have primed doors and will prime and paint the rest. Only issue is the kickboard. It is laminate, and looks terrible.

i was wondering is there a product I can use to glue over the top? As it’s such an awkward space to paint for one fat old lady 🤣

I like the way you are working through your kitchen 🙂

I can think of two options you could try.

Option 1

Replace the kickboards depending on how they have been installed. If your kitchen cabinets sit on a plinth the kickboards could be part of the structure is all. If they cant be removed you could install new ones over the top so you dont need to work on the laminate.

Option 2

Use laminate paint. I have done so before on laminated surfaces and it works well. You need to rough up the laminate surface via sanding a bit but it does work and looks pretty nice. I have found the longer the laminate paint drys before the top coats the better it bonds.

What was the height of the current kickboards, and how much depth do you have from the face of the cupboards to the face of the kickboards?

There are a variety of different coloured Kitchen Kickboards that you could simply glue to the front of the existing kickboards. Assuming yours are a standard size, you should be able to just cut them to length and stick them to the existing ones with some Liquid Nails. Ideally, you would add some screws or trim nails, but I think you could get by without them if you use plenty of glue.

This would still require you to get down low to the ground, but it would certainly reduce the amount of time spent down there.

i feel that’s the best option, as also the dishwasher has a gap. I thought I had seen a product a few years back which is like laminate which can be glued directly onto the kickboard, but have only seen something like it in silver.

yes correct, the kickboards are actually just the plinth structure.

Option would be to cover as I am a bit over the painting. Although it has vastly improved look, at the end of the day it is a 24 year old kitchen.

As they say, "cant make a silk purse out of a sows ear". But is this instance budget restraints are the issue.

I have seen some stick on products: from Handles & more, but it is too high and also silver. My new look incorporates gold handles/knobs.

Otherwise lots of products which stick on from Amazon and Temu. But am pretty nervous of longevity, especially at floor level.??

they are 94mm high and need approx. 10 mtres. I dont really want to paint them.

I did see a product in store called Bellessi Polymer Splashback that an assitant said I could use. It seems expensive and not sure it comes in 94mm.

Also found stuff on Amazon/Temu but wary of quality.

The Bellessi 145 x 2440 x 4mm Polymer Kickboards would be good if you had more height to work with, but unfortunately they don't come in that height. You could cut them down, but this would be a bit tricky.

Alternatively, you could paint and then attach these 92 x 11mm 5.4m Moulding White Pine FJ Primed DAR with liquid nails, setting them hard against the floor, then sealing the top edge with No More Gaps. This would be a cost-effective solution that would be both durable and relatively easy to install.
