How to encourage Tahitian Lime to fruit?

Hi Team,

I have a Tahitian lime in a large half barrel for 4 years. Last 3 years it had flowers but never fruited. This year also it had plenty of blossoms. All of them fallen off by themselves and now I have only one medium size and three small size ones. The plant looks healthy, no pest or anything. Looks like the remaining one will get mature...not sure. I was wondering if it's normal to have a lime tree for 4 years and no fruits at all? 

I use citrus Yates fertilizer and spray regularly.

It sounds like you’re doing a lot right with your Tahitian lime, especially since the tree looks healthy and flowers regularly. It’s actually quite common for potted lime trees to take several years before producing a consistent crop, so you’re not alone. The most likely reason your blossoms have dropped without setting fruit is a combination of factors. Limes are sensitive to temperature changes, and sudden cold nights or hot, dry winds during flowering can easily cause buds or young fruit to fall off. Although Tahitian limes are self-pollinating, if your tree is in a sheltered or still area, it might not be getting enough pollination. Lightly brushing the flowers with a small paintbrush or gently shaking the branches can help. 

Inconsistent watering can also lead to fruit drop; citrus trees like evenly moist soil that drains well, so avoid letting the mix dry out completely or become waterlogged. Since you’re using a citrus fertiliser, make sure it’s applied at the recommended rate and consider adding a little potash (potassium) during flowering to support fruit set. 

After four years in the same half-barrel, your tree might also be a bit root bound, so it could benefit from repotting into fresh mix or a slightly larger container. The good news is that Tahitian limes typically start producing reliable fruit between four and six years of age, so you’re right on the verge of that stage. With steady care and a few small adjustments, you should soon be enjoying a healthy harvest.
