How to prepare conduit for painting?

Hi,

I have a relatively short length of conduit running down the side of the house, that I would like to paint. It is just on 12 months old. I have sanded it and, have have read I can clean if with regular detergent - which I will do. The next step I am reading though is to wipe it over with a solvent. Is this necessary? I don't have any and don't really want to buy a large amount as I only have this one short length of conduit.

The conduit length is on the west facing side of house and does get some sun in the late afternoon.

Hi @cassy1,

I'd say you can skip the solvent step, just ensure it is clean and free from grease or oil from your hands. You can treat the conduit the same as a PVC downpipe, and here's a helpful guide: How to paint downpipes. It is recommended that you use a specialised primer such as Dulux 1L PRECISION White Maximum Strength Adhesion Primer. Obviously, it's quite a large container, but it can be used on a wide variety of difficult-to-paint surfaces around the home.

Thank you for this reply. Sound good - as does the link on how to paint downpipes! I should have read that first before posting!! 😉

While I'm on a roll posting though - how difficult would it be to paint a steel shed - again not old about 12 months. Its isn't painted at all (just silver)? Im wishing I had got it in Woodland grey (same as colorbond fence). Ah well.

You should wash the shed down with sugar soap before flushing it with clean water and waiting for it to dry, Carole (@cassy1). After that, you'll be able to use White Knight Rust Guard Grey Quick Dry True Bite Primer Paint and then your chosen topcoat. I'd recommend painting with a roller, or you could even use a paint sprayer.

I wouldn't say it's a difficult job.
