Two custom ottomon units offering plenty of built-in storage built using framing timber, fabric and gas struts.
The project
Our previous couch had an ottoman that fit well with it, forming a bed for us to relax and watch movie nights. We were missing it with the new couch. So I decided to build two with storage.
Steps
Step 1
Plan plan plan. You should calculate all lengths; where what will land, how it will look in front, back and sides.
I even planned how many cuts to make on the large board.
Step 2
Start by assembling the box. Put three framing timber on the bottom for structural integrity. Two people can sit comfortably on this ottoman. Drill holes for hinges in the top piece.
Step 3
Paint the inside. You can choose to cover it with fabric as well. Use foam, polyester fill (to get a smooth finish) and cloth. Start stapling. There are several videos on YouTube on how to get a smooth finish. Install hinges after this is done.
Step 4
I sewed the sides to create a sleeve. Inserted the sleeve into the box. It took some elbow grease to get a tight fit. Stapled top and bottom. Using same fabric, I stitched a small handle and stapled it as well. Added gas struts for easy opening and closing.
