Vegetables for planting in autumn and winter?

Hi everyone,

I live in a apartment and have got a small garden area (= multiple pots) on my west facing baloncy. While I've got herbs out there at present, I'd really like to do something more adventurous and fire up some vegetables in autumn and winter.

Are there any vegetables that the community can recommend would be good in limited space in colder months?

(FYI - I am based on Sydney so it's not toooo cold)

Hi @AndrewSa, you have plenty of options, including peas, beans, carrots, garlic, onions, broccoli, cauliflower and beetroot.

Hydroponic garden.No soil but the plants grow in a fertilised water solution which nourishes the root system.

I thought I would resurrect this old discussion as I'm sure everyone is finding it challenging at the moment finding affordable fruit and vegetables.

Let me tag the wonderful @Noelle for her tips on great vegetables to plant at this time of year to help save on those grocery bills and be able to enjoy wonderful fresh produce straight from the garden.

Great idea to re-introduce this conversation! Here are my tips to get the ball rolling.

In cooler climates (southern NSW, SA, Tas and Vic), now is a good time to lift, divide and replant crowns of::

Rhubarb
Asparagus
Horseradish
Globe artichoke

It's too cold to sow seeds outside now but if you want to sow into seed trays that can be kept indoors or under cover for warmth, you can have seedlings of the following ready to plant into the vegie patch when the weather warms in spring:

Broad beans
Onions
Spinach
Silverbeet and rainbow chard

In warmer climates (northern NSW, Qld, northern WA and the NT), seeds of the following may be sown direct into the vegie patch ort into seed trays for later transplanting:

Seeds of the following may be sown now either direct into the soil or into seed trays for later transplanting:

Beetroot
Silverbeet
Spinach
Carrots
Lettuce (all types)
Beans (bush and climbing)
Spring or green onions
Leeks
Fennel
Peas (snow/sugar snap and shelling varieties)

It's also a good time to plant perennial crops like:

Jerusalem artichoke
Galangal
Ginger
Turmeric
Rhubarb
Asparagus
Globe artichoke
