How to replace a pantry door?

Hi guys, I'm wanting to replace our pantry door and I was wondering if anyone has used the SpecRite 2400 x 900 x 33 mm Brown Acacia Multi-Use Timber Panel and cut it down to size to fit a pantry door?!?

Here's a link to the panel I'm asking about.

I'm sick of the current standard white door and the other wooden doors online are very expensive, so I thought this would be a nicer cheap option. I would love to see photos if anyone has done this. Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

Unfortunately, I don't have an example I can show you, but fundamentally, it would work.

The main consideration you would need to make is around the weight of this panel. As long as your pantry is solid and you use suitable hinges that are able to take the weight of the panel, then there is no reason you couldn't use it.

What kind of hinges does your current door use? What is the frame of the pantry like?

It's definitely possible; we'd just need to make sure the frame is solid enough to support it and that we use the right hinges in the right quantity.

If you could upload some photos of your pantry showing the hinges and frame, that would certainly help.

I am in agreement with JacobZ in regards to his concern about the weight. The typical weight of a 600mm pantry door is around 18kg. The panel you've linked to is around 40kg and I don't think the standard door hinges will be able to carry such weight. I propose looking at the Specrite 1800 x 600 x 18mm Timber Multi Use Pine Panel or perhaps cover the front of your existing door with 2440 x 1220mm 3mm Plywood Pine Premium BC Grade. Both of these panels can be stained to your preferred colour.

But once we see your door and hinges, we'll be able to give you more recommendations.

Thank you so much for your replies and yes it makes sense what you all have said. I didn't think about the weight of the Timber Panel I was thinking of with the hinges. We have a metal door frame and some crappy looking hinges. I have attached photos of the door and frame and a close up of one of the hinges as requested.

Sorry for the delay in replying. I removed access from Facebook login and couldn't log back in, so the great staff at Bunnings Workshop fixed the issue for me and now I'm tammy1970 and no longer tammy11170 haha

Hi @tammy1970,

I haven't seen someone use one of these panels as a door before, but as mentioned, it would probably work. Multi-use panels are typically used for benchtops and the like. They are glued together strips of timber and generally not suggested for hanging by their edge. Your hinge screws will penetrate into the depth of a couple of strips of timber. So, the entire weight of the door will be supported by a single glued joint in the timber. Whether this glued joint is capable of supporting the weight and stress of being used as a door is a bit unknown.

As an alternative you could fake it.... 🙂

Using your existing door you could sand the surface so its roughed up and then use Porta 35 x 4mm 1.2m Tasmanian Oak Square Edged Board or something else as thin (Bunnings have more I am sure but wander through the timber trim isle and you will see a large range)

I would remove the door from the hinges, taking note of how it opens so you dont make it thick when it will jamb or catch, lay it on some timber horses. Then sand. Once you are happy with the roughness (its to give something for the liquid nails to grab onto) then start with an edge and install strips of the timber trim. I would make sure that the lengths are cut square as once you have glued them down they wont be moving 🙂

It will add extra weight to your existing door, but hopefuly not as much as that solid timber you were originally thinking of. You only need to do one side, the other side I would sand and paint to match.

Thank you Dave-1 .. I guess that could be an option. I was thinking of painting the door frame monument, so I could paint the inside of pantry door that colour too. You've given me something to think about there. The husband might like this cheaper option too haha .. cheers

Hi AlanM52 .. yeah I already had a look at the Internal Standard Doors and the look I was after is quite pricey. I was trying to opt for a cheaper way of doing it that still looked really good. Hi AlanM52.. I was looking for something simple that looked good in a walnut stain to suit the rest of our furniture in the area. Nothing too busy or old fashioned. I haven't really seen anything that really wowed me. I guess this one https://www.bunnings.com.au/corinthian-moda-white-oak-internal-door-amod1-720mm-x-2040mm-x-35mm_p0075021 would look ok in a walnut stain but I didn't want to spend that much on a door if I didn't have to haha
