How to insulate a brick shed?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about how to insulate your brick shed.

I'm aware that this suggestion will take space from your brick shed. But the best way to properly insulate your shed is to install a timber stud wall that can hold standard batts. I suggest having a look at this discussion - How to build framing inside a brick garage by @Amatuer84. There are some excellent links mentioned in the discussion that will help you build a stud wall.

The best part is that because you have a timber stud wall installing the TV to the wall will not be an issue.

You mentioned that you are not keen on using plasterboard my suggestions are to use 2500 x 1250mm 12mm OSB Panel - 12mm or plywood. In regards to your flooring, I suggest looking at installing Floor Select 6mm 2.2m² Blackbutt Hybrid Waterproof Flooring.

What plasterboard will you recommend instead of braceboard dont like the colour

Now that is an interesting problem 🙂

If we add anything to insulate the intereior of the room it will fast become only 1800mm wide at best or more likely 1750mm wide....

So I am going outside the box 😀 and yeah I see the pun. So instead of insulating the brick wall itself to keep the heat out, how about we insulate the brick wall from the sun itself.

You may have seen vertical diagonal slats covering windows when driving about, its to keep the suns rays off the windows and give privacy at the same time. I am thinking of two ways you could do the same depending on the space you have around your shed.

Make a rectangle frame of H3 timber up to cover the outside wall. Then using merbau timber or a 20mm thick H3 rated outside treated timber and screw slats that are skewed 45degrees to the edge, so it kind of looks like a large cheese grater. Space the slats so each new slat lines up like the teeth on a hacksaw blade. IRWIN Wood Hacksaw Blades - 10 Pack if you zoom in you can see the teeth, I am suggesting to have the slats lined up liek the teeth, This is to stop the sun directly hitting the bricks, insulating it from the outside type deal.

I can draw up a sketch tomorrow if its hard to picture.

As an alternative you could use the same rectangular frame and install SpecRite 1800 x 902mm Pre-Oiled Merbau Alternating Slat Fence Panel over it (leave the bottom 500mm empty and the top 500mm empty) to save doing the whole wall. Lattice Makers 2400 x 600mm Mahogany Hardwood Lattice Panel would be third choice but think it wouldnt stop the sun enough.

The last part to insulate would be the roof inside, We cant see the makeup of it but if its tin then something will be needed to be installed to hold up some insulation bats at the very least.

The Tv can be mounted to the brickwork directly, you could paint the walls or go for the OSB panel direct on the brickwork.

You could look at easycraft 2400 x 1200 x 9mm easyVJ100 Wall Lining Primed General Purpose MR MDF E0 or Ekodeck 219 x 26mm 3.6m Hazelwood Batten Screen Castellated Panel along with cement sheeting.

If you can draw up a sketch i appreciate it you right its hard to picture you suggesting to do the brick walls outside to keep the heat out not now but in the future I will get blinds done to keep the sun out as well

So the frame is just a rectangular frame screwed together. (70 by 35mm or 90 by 45mm H3 timber)

The diagonal slats are fixed in place via screwed trhough top and bottom. They diffuse the sunlight gettingthrough the slats.

The green arrows are for fixing the frame to the brick wall via some masonary screws. I would also fix the horizontal rails.

The Bottom left of the sketch shows what a top down look at how the slats are installedinthe frame.

Note - Change the way the slats are diagonal depending on which way you recieve the majority of your sunlight from.

Some thoughts:

Externally limewash the brick wall.

Framed trellis with shade mesh stapled on the back standing off the brick wall.

Misting between the above and the brick wall.

1. I will like to know what can I use to insulate the 🧱 wall to keep the heat out?

Cheapest, easiest and most effective would be to plant trees along the outside wall. The air gaps will provide air flow with great insulation properties.

2. what can I use other than plasterboard wont make the room smaller from the inside so I can hang a tv on the wall

At the most you would loose around 15mm on all walls so, you wouldn't even notice it to line the walls. And no other product will save you much more than at best 5mm. So it comes down to preference.

3. Should I use for concrete floor tiles -vinyl tiles or timber

Totally up to you what you want underfoot. Carpet Floor tiles are ultra cheap when you buy them 2nd hand. Vinyl floor tiles are a very good options as is straight vinyl. Timber is the least durable and for this application would put down as last preference.

Thank you for the photo.

You could try the screen idea on the left of your shed, maybe the right as well if the sun hits the wall.

I am not sure how far from the fence the rear of teh shed is but if teh sun hits that wall as well then I would also install a screen.

Seeing that you have a tiled roof on the shed I am wondering if you have sarking under it? Whichever way Insulation bats installed would help bring the heat down.

With the window being so large, Rubber backed curtains on the inside and maybe a canvas awning hanging in front for summer sun.

@Dave-1 my ceiling is getting done professionally tomorrow with insulation and plasterboard he will bring someone to change the skirting for ceiling? I was thinking if doing plasterboard for the brick wall outside of the shed not the inside and I was thinking of getting blinds for window so it keeps the heat out as well

That would be a definenite NO for plasterboard outside the shed 🙂 You would end up with a large mess the first rain you get.

Cladding with an air gap seperates the transfer of heat from the first material to the brickwork under it. The main reason I am thinking of some kind of insulation/air gap/shade for the wall is to keep as much space as possible inside your shed.

Ekodeck 164 x 13.5mm 5.4m Lighthouse Shiplap Cladding might be worth having a look at. There are other types as well. Aything to give an air gap would be better then no air gap.

@Dave-1 Sounds like a brilliant idea lighthouse shiplap for the outside of the brick shed and what blinds should I get from bunnings and do bunnings cut it to size or got to do it yourself

Bunnings do sell blinds but id stop into spotlight and check out their rubber backed sunblock styled ones. Depends on how you will fit out your shed 🙂

Bunnings dont cut blinds to size, Neither do spotlight. But both have blinds that will cover the window area, When purchasing a curtain styled blind, for maximum effect you need 1.5 times the width of material if not 2 times the width. This is for the folds of the blind so its not just a flat surface.

Great tip on the extra width for blockout blinds, @Dave-1! I recently put some up in my son's room, and there is no light transfer through them. You also want them to extend past the sides of the window, as light creeps past there, if you only have them finish at the edge of the frame.

I was thinking more along the lines of the wavy style type Windoware 120 x 223cm Natural Mali Blockout Eyelet Curtain - 1 Pack times 2 of.

I feel they give a better insulation compared to a roller blind. But really it comes down to what you want in your shed. Its worth it to spnd a little more for comfort as you will be spending time there. When I have outfitted a room I always feel better going for something maybe a little dearer then what id like to pay at first.

Put together a bunch of pictures that you like for various items in your room, it helps solidify. Right down to what type of light and also lamp shade you will choose. The warmth of a light can make a room feel cosy or cool, even clinical depending on the kelvin it is rated at. 🙂

Everytime you think you will have it sorted, you pull back the cover a little and there is another world to explore!

@Dave-1 I got the curtain for the inside im just looking at blinds to put on the outside of the window not inside the shed the curtain you said is prefect

I suggest having a look at the Coolaroo 2.4 x 2.4m Graphite Crank Operated Outdoor Blind for your outside window. It has a 5-year fabric warranty and does not use cords or chains to safely operate.

I like the look of the outside blind that @EricL has shown. The curtains should do a decent job of blocking the heat, the outside blind will have a +3 effect (taking a guess on the number lol It will probarlly double the effect I would think)
