Is artificial grass suitable for a pet bathroom?

I am planning to install artificial grass in my backyard and would like to designate a section in one corner as a bathroom area for my pet. Could you please advise whether artificial grass is suitable for this purpose, or if you would recommend an alternative option?

Artificial grass can work perfectly well as a designated pet bathroom area. Many pet owners choose synthetic turf for exactly this reason because it drains well, it stays green, and it prevents the constant patching and repair that happens with real grass. The key is staying on top of maintenance. Urine will drain through the turf into the base material, but if it is left to build up it can create lingering smells. Giving the area a regular flush with fresh water helps dilute and wash away residue before it settles. A quick hose-down every day or two in warm weather, and perhaps weekly in cooler months, usually keeps things under control. If you notice any odour developing, a pet-safe deodoriser designed for artificial grass can neutralise the smell rather than just masking it.

Some people prefer to create a slightly different setup under the designated pet spot. Using a compacted road base topped with crusher dust beneath the turf improves drainage and gives you a more porous layer for liquids to pass through. Others like to install a small grate or aggregate pit directly under the pet area to allow even faster drainage. You can also consider using a removable artificial grass mat on top of pavers or pebbles if you want something that can be lifted, cleaned, and dried more easily. It really depends on how often your pet uses the area and how sensitive you are to the idea of occasionally having to freshen it up. The main thing is that artificial grass is absolutely a suitable option; it just works best when combined with good drainage underneath and a simple routine of rinsing and deodorising to keep your backyard smelling clean and comfortable.
