How to fill floor gap before sliding door wardrobe?

Hi,

In one of my bedrooms in front of the sliding door wardrobe there is a long gap going from one side of the sliding door to the other between the laminate floor and the sliding door. I am unsure what I can use to fix or hide this gap. Either a gap filler or quarter round laminate trim . As you can see in the photo there was a trim installed that has now come off and when I try to put in place it keeps interfering with the sliding door wardrobe .

For two main reasons, a cover trim would be much better. The first is that the ends of the boards don't line up perfectly, which would be visible if you were to just fill the gap. The second reason is that most flooring like this requires an expansion gap at the ends, and by filling the gap, you would be removing the expansion gap.

It looks like a scotia or cornice moulding, which I'm not sure would be the best choice for this situation, but if it worked before, I imagine we can make it work again.

How was the trim sitting before? If it is attached flat, does the handle fin on the sliding door pass over the top of it? If you dry-fit the trim and make sure the back edge of the trim is clear of the door, is the gap visible?

Tidying up and removing the old glue with a paint scraper and some Goof Off Adhesive Remover would be a good place to start. Make sure you remove the glue from the floor, and if you are going to reuse the trim, tidy it up also. Once clean, wipe the surfaces down with a damp cloth to remove any residual adhesive remover.

To glue it down, you can use a good bead of Liquid Nails along the length of the trim.

If we can't work out how to get this trim to work, you might have to look at alternative flooring trims. Something flatter, like a Bronze Multi-end Trim might be the way to go.

Hi Jacob,

thank you so much for you’re reply . When the trim is on the door doesn’t smoothly open or close as the trim is in the way. If I move it abit away from the sliding door the gap is still visible . What would you recommend? Do you think quarter round one might be better or the multi bronze one?

Whatever you use would need to be slimline enough to fit underneath the fin on the sliding door.

I can't imagine a quarter round would be thin enough to do this, so I was thinking if you used a flat trim that bridged across the gap or something like the Roberts 8 - 14mm x 1.65m Bronze Multi-end Trim with the shorter leg sitting vertically in the gap hard up against the outside of the sliding door frame, with the longer leg sitting horizontally over the gap and on the flooring, then this would cover the gap nicely without affecting the function of the door.

In saying this, looking at the trim that was already there, it looks like it would fit under the fin on the door if you positioned it correctly. Do you know how it was installed before?

Hi Jacob,

Im not sure how it was positioned before but the person that put it on did a good job and this was a few years . I’ve tried to position the trim but it doesn’t seem to fir under the fin door . I will try using the

Bronze Multi-end .Do I just use liquid nail to to glue it down?

I propose using Sika 290ml Crystal Clear Sikaflex-112 Adhesive Sealant to stick the trim on the floor. The adhesive will not stand out even if it spills out a bit as it dries crystal clear. Plus, it offers flexibility even when its cured.
