How to install decorative edge for hard plaster next to exposed brick wall?

I have been exposing a brick wall and I now need to find a way to finish the plaster so there is a clean transition from plaster to brick. I was thinking along the lines of a metal beading similar to what would be put on the edge of a tiled backsplash but I am not sure what products are suitable to do this with hard plaster.

Hi @ewan,

Typically, you would use a stopping angle or stopping bead to get a nice flush finish, but they need to be installed alongside the plaster, so in your situation, where you are removing the plaster back to a point, this wouldn't be a great option.

As an alternative, you could install a timber trim like this 31 x 31mm hard up against the plaster to create a transition between the two materials. You could then seal the seams between it and the plaster and bricks with some No More Gaps, then paint the trim to create a seamless transition.

Thank you. To clarify I had to remove more of the plaster than I initially planned as it was damaged. So I will be repairing some of the plaster. Given this the metal stopping looks like the best bet. Do you know if it comes in other finishes? Or is it intended to be painted?

My vote is for a timber trim 🙂 Mainly becaus ethey come in so many different shapes and sizes plus ease of use/modify the pieces.

However I think you prefer the metal trim, When I was installing a straight edgein the garage and spare room I really wanted to actually reverse the metal tryim so teh perforations stood out as a decorative look. Right down to spray painting the metal black. (I would use a seperate piece to get a clean line and then install the decorative piece afterawards if you take up the idea.) Also if you paint you need a few days of decent sunshine for the paint to go off and solidly stick to the material before using painters tape one it.

Hi @ewan

The metal trim @JacobZ would provide the cleanest finish, but maybe too late to use with the new plasterboard in place. It has a 30mm side designed to go under the plasterboard board edge during installation. But you might be able to use a multitool blade and run it between the bricks and board edge and slide it in.

Otherwise I would use 12mm x 12mm Tassie oak trim against the edge which is often how I have finished similar scenarios and painted it the same as the wall colour.
