How to relocate clothesline?

Hi folks

New member here! I’m trying to move an existing clothesline to a new location as it is currently too low (hazard of bumping in the head) and in the way. I’m exploring 3 options:

1) Take it out from the ground and move it to new location

2) Somehow raise the height in the existing location so it’s at least 1 foot above its current height

3) Cut it off below the base if it can’t be moved. Then buy a new clothesline and install. I can’t buy a fence mounted clothesline as the fence is old and weak.

Any suggestions on which is the best method and what would I need to accomplish it would be great!

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your questions about your clothesline.

It is possible to take it out of the ground and reposition it in another spot. It will take a fair bit of effort depending on how deep the cement footing is. Can the footing be demolished? If it is just plain concrete, you could use a mini-sledge hammer to crack the footing and thereby releasing the post. Can you install it higher with the old post? Probably not unless you can find an extension post that works with your existing set.

In order to install it higher you'll need to get a compatible post that will provide that extra height you are after. Please keep in mind that if other people are using the clothesline increasing its height might make it hard for that person to reach the hanging lines. Cutting it off at the base would be your last resort, it would mean that you'll either get a new post or replace the entire set. Should you decide to do that I propose looking at the Hills 26m Single Folding Clothesline - Woodland Grey along with the Hills Folding Post Kit - Woodland Grey (New 2.4m Height).

Is there an easy way to get the post out of the ground instead of digging all the way to the bottom? Can I use some kind of fence post remover?

Alternatively, if I want to raise the height of the clothesline post, can I use the galvanised 50x50 mm fence post available at Bunnings and use it as a sleeve by cutting the clothesline post in the middle and placing a section of fence post between it. Then just joining them together with nuts and bolts. The clothesline post thickness is 40x40 mm.

There are tools like the Jack Steel Post Lifter and Remover which uses a lever action to lift the post out of the ground. However, I'm not sure if your current 40mm post will be strong enough to hold its shape when the post remover pulls it out of the ground. The only other tool that comes to mind is the Cyclone 1650 x 25mm Hex Fencing Bar. The chiselled end of the bar can be used to break apart the cement footing of the post.

In regards to using the 50x50 fence post, it is an interesting idea, the only condition I would check is to make sure that the steel thickness of the 50x50 is the same as the existing 40x40. This is to make sure that the 50x50 can hold the weight of the clothesline. Using a nut and bolt configuration should be enough to secure the clothesline to the new extension piece.
