How to treat cut hardwood fence posts?

We have just bought a 2.4m hardwood fence post and cut it to make a really low decorative fence. It doesn't say what type of timber it is but the product code is 0063196. Do we need to treat it before putting it in the ground (or leaving it exposed to the elements) given it is hardwood?

Hello @tfd

While this timber is already H4 treated so suitable for in-ground use, I like to add an additional layer by painting it with bitumen paint such as Bondall Inground Timber Protector, just to extend its life even further.

Hi @tfd,

I'm glad to see that @twocutekelpies is already all over it. That's exactly what I would suggest. It's always good practice to re-treat/seal any cut treated timber to ensure the end is protected. The other option is to spray the cut end with TWA Woodcare 300g Ecoseal Tanalised Timber Treatment. However, I do prefer painting a bitumen over the whole area that will be beneath the ground.
